1. Remove dust and dirt

A quick sweep or vacuum is the essential first step. Use a soft-bristled broom or a vacuum with a wood floor setting to remove dust, hair, and dirt. The Joseph Joseph CleanStore Dustpan and Brush or CleanStore Broom make this task quick and easy, with a wall-mounted design that keeps it close at hand but out of sight.

2. Mopping wooden floors

Be mindful that wood and water aren't exactly best friends so it is important to know how to mop hardwood floors without causing any damage. For regular cleaning, a lightly dampened sweep with the CleanTech™ Spray Mop works wonders without over-saturating the wood. Avoid traditional string mops that tend to hold too much water and can soak the floor.

3. Remove stubborn stains

Remember, less is more when it comes to scrubbing wood surfaces. For floors that are looking a bit lacklustre, give them some extra attention with the CleanTech™ Dual-Sided Surface Scrubber. It’s perfect for targeted, gentle scrubbing. But if you’re tackling stuck-on grime, our Spot Cleaning Multi-Tool works harder.

4. Maintain weekly

To keep your floors looking pristine, develop a regular cleaning schedule. Weekly light cleaning combined with a more intensive monthly deep clean can do wonders. Our CleanTech™ Microfibre Pads and CleanTech™Duster with CleanStore Sheath make maintaining wood floors efficient and manageable.

5. Protect your floors

Extend the life of your wooden floor by protecting it with mats at entryways to reduce dirt, and use furniture pads to avoid scratches. Proactive protection and regular cleaning is the best way to prevent long-term damage and wear-and-tear.

FAQs About Cleaning Your Wooden Floor

Is it okay to mop wood floors with water?
Yes, but be cautious. Use a spray mop with a lightly dampened microfibre pad to avoid oversaturating the floor. Excess water can seep into the wood, causing warping and damage over time.

Can you use vinegar and water on hardwood floors?
Vinegar is often suggested but use it sparingly as it’s quite acidic and can strip the finish from your floor. Diluted solutions can work for deep cleaning, but it’s best to stick with products formulated for hardwood.

Can you use washing up liquid to clean a wooden floor?
Yes, but use only a drop or two in warm water. Washing up liquid cuts through grime without being harsh on your floor. You should make sure that the mop is only damp, not wet, to avoid leaving residue behind.

Why are my wood floors still dirty after mopping?
If your floors still feel sticky or look dull, it may be due to residue left behind by previous cleaning solutions. Using a microfibre cloth to go over the floor after mopping can help pick up any remaining grime.

Cleaning isn’t just about appearances. It gives you and your family a wellness boost, too. Keeping your wooden floors tidy not only improves the look and feel of your home but also reduces allergens and contributes to a clearer mind. With the Joseph Joseph CleanTech™ range, your wooden floors can look fabulous without fuss. Give your home the care it deserves with products that work as hard as you do.

How to remove scratches from hardwood floors

To remove scratches from hardwood floors, start by cleaning the area with a damp cloth (or a CleanTech™ Spray Mop for larger areas) to remove dirt and debris. For light scratches, gently rub a hardwood floor cleaner or a mixture of olive oil and vinegar into the scratch using a soft cloth, then buff it out.

For deeper scratches, use a wood filler or wax stick that matches your floor colour, applying it carefully to fill the scratch, then smoothing the surface with a plastic scraper. Finish by blending the repaired area with a wood marker or polish. Regular floor maintenance and putting protective pads on your furniture can help prevent future scratches.
