Behind closed doors: Daniel Ibáñez Parra’s Alexandra Road Estate flat

Share article

In this series we document how organisation and design shape a home. Daniel’s Grade II listed Alexandra Road Estate apartment features multi-functional storage that adapts to the needs of the space.

How a 1970s Alexandra Road Estate kitchen works today

Daniel and his partner’s original Alexandra Road Estate kitchen was designed by modernist architect Naeve Brown, and makes the most of the limited floor plan of the flat.

Thoughtful design details like sliding panel doors, sliding cupboards and sliding windows help keep the space easy to use, empty of clutter and free of odours. Constant air-flow helps the kitchen breathe and maximise daylight, and the internal doors act as soundproofing for when the living room and kitchen are in use at the same time.

“The great thing about this kitchen is that it keeps itself very organised.”

The wardrobe in the bedroom shares the same sliding partition as the windows, allowing Daniel to see inside his wardrobe, or cover it up.

Double windows, multiple jobs

Built directly in front of a busy railway line, the apartment’s double walls and specialised sliding windows help sound proof the flat and absorb vibrations. These partitions also offer blackout and temperature control.
