When you think of small apartments, you automatically think of storage issues, overcrowding and cramped spaces – which is the opposite of what Rosie has achieved with her loft space.  

A prime example of how to make space work harder, Rosie’s centrepiece is bookshelf that doubles up as everyday storage and a display unit. She gave thought and consideration to her everyday needs like charging cables and shoe storage as part of the design, which means the result is a feature wall that is both gorgeous and useful.

Unsightly, everyday items like vacuum cleaners and shoes can be enclosed behind cupboard doors, with open shelving left to house aesthetic items like plants, books and ornaments.

Making more of small spaces

Small floors plans don’t have to result in clutter. Rosie’s apartment is proof that with proper systems and thinking, you can achieve the goal of a relaxing space. Rosie’s top tips:

Make each space perform more than one function, so you get the most out of every inch. Whether that’s a study that doubles up as a guest space, or a bookshelf that also hides everyday essentials, the principle remains.
Keeps things you use every day accessible. Keep shoes on ground level for easy access, keep keys and coats by the door where you’ll need them, keep glasses by the sink. All these small design choices save time day to day.
Put unused space to work. Whether it’s the empty under-stairs space or alcove gaps in the kitchen, real storage opportunities are hiding in plain sight.
